Certificate of eligibility and Pre-Doctoral Examination

  • To be able to obtain a Dr. rer. nat. at the Faculty of Medicine, you must prove that you could be accepted as a doctoral candidate at one of the natural science faculties at LMU.
  • Please contact the faculty relevant to your degree to request this certificate of eligibility.
  • The following LMU faculties can issue certificates of eligibility for natural scientists:
    • Faculty of Biology
    • Faculty of Chemistry and Pharmacy
    • Faculty of Physics
    • Faculty of Mathematics, Computer Science and Statistics
    • Faculty of Geosciences

Pre-doctoral examination at the Faculty of Medicine

Students, who are only entitled to obtain their proof of eligibility for doctoral studies from the faculty relevant to  their degree, after successfully passing a preliminary doctoral examination, have two options: They can take the preliminary doctoral examination either at the relevant faculty of natural sciences at the LMU or at the Faculty of Medicine in accordance with the respective doctoral regulations.

  • Goal: Proof of knowledge and skills that can be expected to lead to a successful doctorate
  • For admission to the preliminary doctoral examination, you must submit a written application to the Doctoral Committee, stating your major subject and two minor subjects. Please contact the relevant team member in the doctoral office.

Procedure

  1. The doctoral committee appoints the three examiners and selects the chair
  2. The chair sets the examination date and invites the applicant at least eight weeks before the date and names the examiners.
  3. The preliminary doctoral examination is an oral examination (duration approx. 30 - 45 min), topic: the specified major subject and the two minor subjects. The minor subjects must be appropriate to the doctoral project.
