Thesis evaluation and Oral Defence
Evaluation of the Submitted Thesis
- Your dissertation will be evaluated by a total of 6 experts.
- 1st evaluation: is prepared by the doctoral supervisor
- 2nd evaluation: the doctoral committee selects another member of the examination committee with a doctorate in natural sciences
- 4 expert opinions: the Doctoral Committee obtains four expert opinions on the dissertation
- The dissertation is accepted if the 2 evaluations and the 4 expert opinions each suggest a grade of "rite" = 3 (sufficient) or better.
- The dissertation may be returned once by the doctoral committee for revision
Oral Defence
Organization:
- Takes place after the completion of the assessment of the dissertation
- The members of the examination committee are selected by the doctoral committee
- The doctoral office informs the candidate who the examiners are
- The doctoral candidate arrange the time and place of the defense with the examiners
- The official invitation of the defense is issued by the doctoral committee.
Procedure of the oral examination:
- Total duration: approx. 60 min
- of which up to 30 min presentation of the results of the dissertation
- up to 30 min scientific debate/questions
- Guests: The examination is not open to the public. Authorized members of the faculty may be present and may ask questions, other accepted doctoral candidates for the Dr. rer. nat. may be present in limited numbers if the doctoral candidate agrees.
The duration of the evaluation varies greatly from individually. Please understand that we cannot provide any information about the expected duration of the evaluation process or the expected duration until the oral examination.
